Ceiling Fresco in the Meerscheinschlössl

Mozartgasse 3

Italian Baroque painter Giulio Quaglio’s the Younger (1668–1751) 300-year old trompe-l‘oeil fresco covers a remarkable area of nine by nine meters. The circular scenario from 1708 depicts the victory of Christian religion over the gods of the heathen world. At the centre, the shining figure of a woman sitting on a throne represents the triumphant Church. She topples the gods of antiquity whose dynamic rotations reflect the pathos of the Baroque era. Today’s existing neo-classical wall decorations were probably added in the first decade of the 19th century. The stucco medals depict portraits of emperors decorated with an assortment of ribbons, rosettes and intertwined elements.
