Portraits of past rectors of the university
Rectors' Gallery
Aula, Main Building, Universitätsplatz 3/1
Portraits of the rectors of the University of Graz are taken at the end of their term of office and the pictures are displayed in the Aula. The collection currently comprises 35 portraits, 18 of which hang in the Old Senate Hall. On display are works by Richard Kriesche and Hubert Schmalix, among others.
A publication by art historian Barbara Aulinger deals in detail with the rectors' galleries of the Styrian universities: "Dieses Bild ist ähnlichlicher als ich", Leykam Verlag, 2012.
Allegories in the auditorium
Auditorium, Main Building, Universitätsplatz 3/1
Alexander Demetrius Goltz has combined his paintings - signed "A.D. Goltz 1910" - on the north and south sides of the auditorium under the title "The human striving for perfection". Parables embody medicine, jurisprudence, theology, philosophy, study, research and scientific knowledge. A fictitious cityscape is possibly intended to create a reference to Graz. On the rear wall of the auditorium there are sketches and explanations of the paintings.
Contemporary project on the painting of Franz Köck
ÖH building, Schubertstraße 6
An originally National Socialist painting by Franz Köck at the former headquarters of the National Socialist Student Union was reworked by Richard Kriesche and provided with a text by contemporary historian Helmut Konrad calling on young academics to be critical, tolerant and open-minded.
